Historic House Tour Date - The Palapa Society's Historic House Tour is always held the last Sunday in February. The 2011 Tour will be held February 27 and we will be celebrating our 17th year! Why Building On Sand Dunes Is Not A Good Idea - It's very important that anyone who has bought or is considering purchasing a lot on a sand dune, is aware of the risks, problems, and dangers associated with building on a sand dune. Sand dunes are nature’s buffer strip between the sea and land. They're a vital defense mechanism against sea erosion and sand drifting inland caused by wind erosion. Besides decimating a wildlife habitat, here are two other major risks:

1. Stability risk – results from the mobile nature of sand, which makes up the sand dune. Human interference by removing vegetation and road and house construction, coupled with exposure to wind, can lead to dune erosion and undermine building foundations. Once this action begins, it's nearly impossible to prevent a building collapse. Vegetation plays a vital role in keeping sand dunes stable by holding the sand together and shielding it from the wind.

2. Locational risk – the close proximity of sand dunes to the sea creates immediate risks from storms. Whether or not a sand dune is stable, should you wish to buy or build on a sand dune, you will be living in a natural high risk area. Storm waves attack the dunes, transporting the sand out to sea, which has occurred here enough times to be a serious concern.

For years, the Todos Santos community has posted signs on our beaches warning potential buyers of these risks, and that we do not support building on our dunes. Our efforts to educate potential buyers and to build public awareness have been relatively effective, since only two homes "slipped through" and were built, but a third is going up now. There ARE restrictions in place authorizing Profepa to levy hefty fines, stop construction, demolish what was built, and require habitat restoration. Please evaluate the potential loss or damage you may sustain before purchasing or building on a dunes lot. Travel Report (Courtesy, Baja Pony Express) - I left LB just before dawn Wednesday and arrived Ensenada as the sun set, 15 hours including 3 brief stops for fuel and breaks. Saw several motorcycle cops in Constitution but they ignored me. Traffic very light going North, seemed to be many Calif plates headed South. Never more than two vehicles in front of me going through the check points until the one just of South Ensenada. Construction very light in Sur, became frequent in Norte. Chose the Tecate road instead of new Otey Mesa as wanted to get a case of L.A.Ceto before entering the States. Nearly that entire road is just finishing construction or just starting or somewhere in between. However left winery at 10:30 and arrived in Dana Point at 1:30 so not a problem. The border wait was 40 minutes at noon and uneventful. Safe travels!

Mi Perro Muy Vago - Many of you know him. He can jump my wall and often does. He heads to town where he has numerous favorite hangouts - the bookstore, Tacos Chilakos, and Buena Vida, among others. I call him Dusty, others call him Pancho. He is frequently gone for 48 hours, occasionally for as long as four days, but never a week, which is how long it has been since I've seen him. He has not been sighted at any of his other haunts. His last known sighting was by Cruz at the bookstore last Tuesday. He followed a friendly couple over to Chilakos, and hasn't been seen since. I and all of his other fans and supporters would really like news of him. He is Baja tan, has some pitbull in his face and carriage, is incredibly friendly and likes to pretend that, despite his extremely loyal following, he has been abandoned. Beyond Pitiful - there is a pitiful looking Husky/Shepperd mix dog on the road down to cerritos beach. It has a section of a rope tied around its neck and has not eaten for WEEKS by the looks of it and has mangy spots all over. It seems to have been tied up and abandoned at a lot that has a palapa being built on it on the right hand side of the road as you drive towards the beach.
