Leather-backs In Todos Santos - The first Leather-back turtle of the season nested in Todos Santos last week. The 98 precious eggs were moved to the invernadero in Las Playitas where they will be monitored as they incubate for approximately 70 days. The invernadero designed by biologist Elizabeth Gonzalez effectively produces hatchlings on beaches with insufficient sand temperatures such as ours. The project, Todos Tortugueros, welcomes volunteers on nightly partols and incubation supervision. Question About AT & T Blackberry - We live In the Pescadero area. Does anyone know if an AT & T Blackberry will work in this area? Thanks - George Farrow, geofarrow [-at-] yahoo.com
Big Discounts - on property taxes during November, back taxes too. For once, delinquency pays... - Patrick Coffman
RE: Is it Safe to Swim With Sea Lions? - The article that Robert Quirk posted refers to the Steller's Sea lion near San Francisco, and not the California sea lion. Here in the "islotes" around La Paz, where we take people for swimming with this lovely animal, are California Sea lions, and I personally have been swimming with them for over 15 years, in a very safe and fun way. However we do not swim with them during the mating season between June and September, when they became more aggressive.
This particular colony of sea lions have become very accustomed to people for at least 25 years. It's very safe if you go with a trained guide who can speak English and knows the area. - Sergio Jauregui , tsecoadventures [-at-] hotmail.com, www.tosea.net, 612-16-132-08, Todos Santos
RE: Police Activity on The East Cape
The Federal Police are checking US and Mexican vehicles for proper registration and actively looking for stolen US vehicles. The Federal Police DO have very sophisticated computer links that allow them to investigate serial numbers and the vehicle history right on the spot. Many of the federal patrol cars now have radar. Radar nets are frequently seen on the La Paz-Todos Santos highway, the Cabo-San Jose corridor highway and the airport toll road.
Make sure you have your current registration, tags, passport and valid US driver's license with you when you drive on the federal highways. If you have US plates you may not lend your vehicle to a Mexican friend unless they have a valid US driver's license, if they do not and they are stopped the vehicle will be confiscated.
The Federal Police are very well trained, professional and respectful, but they are also firm and know what they are doing. If you treat them with respect you should have no problem. - Artosan Ac, info [-at-] artosan.com, 612 145-0085-----------------------------
Re: the comment on Federale Police giving tickets on the toll road between San Jose and the airport. The same thing happened to a friend late to pick up an arrival. He was told 10km over and due to being late paid the "reduced" fine. It's a sad state when the Federals start doing this, I've always told visitors "they are professionals and don't stoop to such actions." Guess that's not the case. Spread the word this is not an isolated case. - Gus, grasslandcattleco [-at-] gmail.com, Todos Santos
-----------------------------
Not to be outdone by the highway conditions imposed by law enforcement on the East Cape and environs, drivers piloting obvious gringo vehicles stay sharp in your rear view and make not one kilometro over the posted limit exiting La Paz to the South. The white mice troll for pesos with a vengeance from the car wash to the 200K point where the road begins to have a median between north and south corridors. As always, keep $200p in small bills handy, play dumb, ladies-you can softly whimper and cry-and your chances are good to get out of another nice mess without much damage, unless of course, you are driving a blaze orange Hummer with 6 boards on the rack, listening to the Doobie Bros at full volume when you push the window button down..... - Pat
-----------------------------
Adding to the article last week on the Federal Police, Ive been stopped twice and threatened to pay fines for driving my personal car with US plates while possessing a Mexican drivers license.I went to their office on the highway a mile from the airport and spoke about this matter to the commandante. He said as long as the license was current and the same name was on the current registration, it was legal and no infraction should be enforced.Unfortunately, the officers at the airport are not honoring this law and merely going for the bribe. If you are going to the airport, take your passport, since this seems to quell their desire to demand your money.I think there is a certain element in the force, who are bent on intimidating foreigners in order to fill their pockets with extra spending money since many other incidents are being reported...cover your bases and only drive cars with your name on the registration and drivers license. With all the problems we are having with tourism, its a shame they still continue to harrass visiters and some locals in order to line their bolsas.. information is power and we need to know our rights. - Chris, casasueno [-at-] yahoo.com, San Jose Del Cabo
New Mexican Customs Regulations - I've heard that it's bcome much more challenging to bring things into Baja because of the new aduana staff. We're planning a trip with a heavily loaded truck, headed to our casita on the East Cape. We've never had problems or paid duty in the past. I speculate that crossing into Baja at Tecate will be less rigorous than at Otay Mesa or Tijuana. Anyone with experience, please let me know the best strategy. (please respond to my email address, in case I miss it here on The Onion) - Ron Paitich, rpaitich [-at-] gmail.com
ONAPPAFA - Three different postings in the last Onion mentioned ONAPPAFA. We were talked out of getting plates that way a couple of years ago because we understood that those cars are uninsureable. Don't remember where we got that information or how reliable it is, but suggest that anybody going for those plates check that out first. - Janet Howey
Christmas Cards For US And Canada - Finally have written all of my Christmas Cards. If anyone is passing through San Ignacio to the US would you be willing to mail my cards for me? All have stamps on them. Thank you - Agnes Van Gorp, barkysound [-at-] gmail.com
Serious As A Heart Attack - A couple of weeks ago patrick coffman reminded us all not to forget about cows on the road between TS and La Paz. Last night, his words certainly saved a car and probably some bodily injuries if not worse. in the split second between realizing i was doing 65 mph in the dark after running "just one more errand" and not getting out of there until 5:15p, the subconscious kicked in with his words and i spotted the cow in the middle of the 4 lane. what i didn't see was the one my passenger hollered was still in our path and i swear my reaction time would not have been the same without that reminder. if one person avoids a cow like we did last night, after still making full impact with only cosmetic damages to a car, then this repost is worth it. sunset at 5:30p and it was pitch black within 30 mins on the road. just cuz i could do 65 didn't mean i should. - Jack S. Driver
Free Anti Virus and Anti Spyware Program - Microsoft is offering a free Anti Virus and Anti Spyware program. I am using it on two of my primary computers and find that it is just as good as the best programs that you actually pay for. The link for that download is: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
Don't forget to back up you vital documents, pictures and files. It's always a good idea to back them up on a removable hard drive but also burn a DVD and send it to someone you trust. A nationally known author recently had his laptop stolen with his entire life's work on the computer. No problem you would think since he backed up everything on an external drive - the thief stole the laptop and external drive. - the computer guy (Courtesy, Baja Pony Express)

Dental Cleaning 2x1 - What causes gum disease? Gum (periodontal) disease is caused by bacteria. These bacteria, if left along the gumline, will irritate the gums and cause an inflammation reaction. The gums then begin to bleed and swell allowing the bacteria to go deeper under the gumline. If the inflammation is allowed to continue, the bone will begin to demineralize and dissolve. As the bone dissolves around the teeth, the teeth become unsupported and will fall out. Unfortunately, pain does not occur until the final stages of the disease and treatment at that time has very little chance of being successful. If your gums bleed regularly, seek treatment as soon as possible. Mention this ad to receive the promotion - Jorge Gonzalez, drjgonzalez7 [-at-] hotmail.com, 1425200
