Internado Report - First, Prop. Rodolfo, the students and the parents wish to thank all of you who have generously contributed to the bedding fund. The staff and parents want to also replace the old iron frames of the bunk bed with new wood ones. The project just got bigger! It is our hope to have the sufficient funds for the new beds by the beginning of school in August. Please think of these kids when you wish to help our community. US and Canadian checks can be deposited directly without fees, cash can be deposited or given at the school. With a gift of 50$US or more you receive a copy "Rancho Aparte". This charming film is for sale, $10 US.
The sale of the school's organic vegetables and their flowers has been thwarted because of the school being closed due to the flu concerns. The selling of the veggies has three purposes: To involve the older students in business and with the community, an opportunity to make their contribution to the fund and make the broader community aware of the Internado. Within a week or so of school reopening we hope to have stand open one day a week. Please contact me or Prof. Rodolfo for more information. - Scotty Mclemore, scottybcs [-at-] hotmail.com, 612-10-05872s
The Phone Book - May first, finally!---After the Advertisers receive their complimentary copies, the new Phone Book will be available next week. It was downsized in format, to provide all the information given me at a smaller price. It looks more like a booklet this time around. The cost is $40 pesos and will be found at 4 strategic locations that are convenient to all. Cafélix (mid-town) Miguel’s Restaurante (south-side) La Esquina Café (north-side) and Baja Bell in Pescadero. I will run one Ad in the Summer-issue of El Calendario, with the four confirmed places to find the new book.
It’s my continuing hope that maybe the next publication, in 2011, can break even and be provided for free. Thank you for your support, and best wishes to all. - Jan, jans [-at-] janimagine.com, Todos Santos

Update On Flu Outbreak From US Consulate - April 30, 2009
Update on Flu Outbreak in Mexico – Enhanced Health Screening for Departing International Passengers; Mexico Closes Most Public Establishments Nationwide; U.S. Embassy/U.S. Consulate General Tijuana Closed until Wednesday, May 6, 2009- John Stoltzfus
This Warden Message alerts U.S. citizens to the latest information regarding H1N1 Influenza A. The Mexican Secretariat for Communications and Transportation has announced enhanced health screening for all international passengers departing Mexico from the following six airports: Mexico City (Benito Juarez), Guadalajara, Monterrey, Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, and Puerto Vallarta. Any passengers displaying obvious flu-like symptoms may have their temperature taken by health officials; tests for the H1N1 virus may then be administered to those with fevers. Passengers with high temperatures or testing positive for the H1N1 virus will be denied boarding. All passengers should allow ample time for any delays the new health screening may add to the check-in process at the airport. At this time, the Embassy does not know of any plans to expand this screening to other airports or to arriving passengers, but the traveling public should be alert to this possibility. Other than the health screening, neither the U.S. government nor the government of Mexico has imposed any restrictions on travel between the U.S. and Mexico.
On April 30, 2009, the government of Mexico expanded nationwide the closure of federal government activities, and urged the closure nationwide of all establishments where large numbers of the public gather, including restaurants, bars, discos, night clubs, cinemas, movie theaters, theaters, gyms, and convention centers. The closures are expected to last until May 6.
The U.S. Embassy in Mexico, as well as all U.S. Consulates and all U.S. Consular Agencies will follow the lead of Mexican federal government offices and close on Monday, May 4, 2009. The U.S. Consulate General had already been planning to close on the Mexican holidays of Friday, May 1 and Tuesday, May 5. We will reopen on Wednesday, May 6, 2009. For any emergencies before that time, please contact the Consulate General duty officer. From Mexico dial 001 (619) 692-2154. From the U.S., dial (619) 692-2154.
Amerimed Announcement (Courtesy Baja Pony Express) - More information about the Swine Flue Epidemic (Influenza virus A/H1N1): until today is not present in the state of Baja California Sur, there are no POSITIVE cases, just probable cases that are being analyzed but not yet confirmed in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.
Prevention is still the key to continue like this, which includes avoiding public places and staying home as much as possible to avoid close contact with other persons (a distance of up to 6 ft). Good hand-washing techniques (at least for 15-20 seconds) are very important and include washing your hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Antimicrobial wipes or towelettes are just as effective as soap and water in cleaning your hands but aren't as good as alcohol-based sanitizers. Antibacterial soaps are no more effective at killing germs than is regular soap. If used correctly, face masks and respirators may help reduce the risk of getting influenza, but it’s not going to protect you completely against the virus, as matter a fact, the virus is so small that the porosity that they have easily allows the passage of particles, so the use of this it’s more for comfort and it’s harmless. The virus can only live airborne for just a few seconds, but it can live from 24 to 48 hours in dry surfaces, for that reason the important thing is to wash your hands and clean the objects that other people have touched.
The disease is still affecting mostly middle aged healthy persons, and the hypothesis for this is that these groups of people didn’t get the seasonal flu vaccinations.
If you have any of the symptoms like runny nose, nasal congestion, cough with or without phlegm, sore throat, fever >100.3* F (38* C), muscle and joint aches, headache, or shortness of breath, or you think you have been exposed, you need to seek medical attention, please don’t auto medicate, you could be hiding the disease and delaying the diagnose. Remember that the earlier the treatment is started (in the first 72 hrs after the symptoms have started) the more effective it is. There are only two medications that this virus is susceptible, and those are oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza), these are the only ones that are effective, the rest of the antivirals, especially rimantadine and amantadine have shown resistance, and if you take them they may weaken your immune system and make you more prone to catch an infection. Tamiflu it’s the medication that it’s been used mostly and only some hospitals have it in stock, especially the government hospitals (IMSS, SSA, ISSSTE). AmeriMed Hospital in Cabo San20Lucas and San Jose del Cabo have these medications, which you can get prescribed by a physician, with a controlled prescription, after a series of diagnostic tests (rapid diagnosis test) that we have available. This medications and rapid test will be available in our AmeriMed Clinic Los Barriles. Recommendations for using antiviral drugs for treatment or prevention of influenza virus A/H1N1 will change as we learn more about this new virus.
The outbreak in the state of Mexico and in the city of Mexico (DF) it’s showing a tendency of stabilization during the last few days, even though this the World Health Organization has moved, since yesterday, from 4 to 5 the pandemic alert. The phase 5 is characterized by human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region. While most countries will not be affected at this stage, the declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.
The banks will be closed tomorrow, but the ones that open Saturday will be open, also they will open on Monday and Tuesday with extended hours of services to avoid crowds. Most of the government offices will be closed until next Wednesday. The health authorities give daily reports of what decisions they will take and mainly next Tuesday evening they wi
ll decide if the government offices and schools will remain closed.

Wheel and Tire Shop Recommendation (Courtesy Baja Pony Express) - I found a GREAT tire and wheel shop in La Paz. They correctly diagnosed noise in the rear wheels of my 4x4 ranger and installed new drums (the old ones were warped) and a slave cylinder for 600 pesos! They also cleaned my engine and air filter without me asking AND installed late '08 manufactured Firestone, lite truck tires for the ridiculously low price of 94 US each and yes, that included tax, installation and balancing! Why pay 130 US for the same tires at Costco? The owner is Francis Rocha and the shop is Roca Service, located at Marquez de Leon #1546 E/Isabel La Cotolica (tel 612 122 57 88). I highly recommend this place. Bajaralph [-at-] gmail.com

checking the hotel boats as well and the private boats.

What a Awesome Day!! (Courtesy Baja Pony Express) - A group of us had a crazy idea for a day trip. We wanted to go to
Cerralvo Island, maybe see some dolphins, fish a little and snorkel.
We went to Teresa at Awesome Sports fishing and told her what we wanted
to do. It was different from what they normally do, but she said
“Tell us what you want to do and we will try to make it happen”.
So,
on Monday, 12 of us went out on the Too Awesome (which was plenty big
enough), and what a great day we had!! Our expectations were more
than met. We caught fish (heck, more than some do on specific fishing
trips!!), ate lunch and had a wonderful time on the Isle of Cerralvo
(great shells), snorkeled there and again in a second location and
enjoyed a fantastic day on the boat. A great unexpected highlight was
catching a 35 – 40lb Dorado!!! – which we promptly had for dinner!!
We would recommend this trip to anyone who loves to explore or anyone
with children/teenagers. We are already thinking of our next crazy
trip to somewhere else for next spring!! Thank-you Awesome
Sports fishing for a absolute great time!
