Get Those Creative Juices Flowing! - An extraordinary literary event will be coming to Todos Santos this May. Naomi Shihab Nye--a poet, essayist and songwriter who is even more gifted than she is famous, will be leading a three-day poetry workshop. Intended to excite the students’ interest in the power, beauty and magic of words for both readers and writers, the workshop is not limited to those with writing experience.
A class with Ms. Nye is a lively, dynamic event with a talented teacher who engages students deeply and quickly and touches the creative nerve of even those whose creative powers may feel dormant. A quick web search will lead you to more accolades than you can absorb – from lengthy lists of awards and prizes to testimonials from Billy Collins, Bill Moyers, William Stafford and hundreds of others around the world who have experienced her poetry (she has written over 20 books), her teaching and her deep humanity. Follow the YouTube link here to get a sense of her person and her poetry.
The class, limited to 20 students, is a rare opportunity. For all those who have been drawn to Todos Santos for what it offers creatively, this is as good as it gets.
May 11-13th, 2009.

Las Palmas Fire - On Wednesday March 26th my wife and I were on our way to the Las Palmas beach at about noon. As we left our rental car we heard laughter coming from the trail to the beach. Just as we started down the trail we saw a male come running toward the parking lot. He was followed by I think 4 girls. Three of the girls were wearing schools skirts of a light red plaid with white knee socks and white blouse. The other girl was wearing a white skirt with white knee socks and white blouse. I estimated the ages at 13-15 years old. When we started down the trail we saw massive flames high in the tops of the palm trees. I feel certain that these people started the fire that day. - Ward Hauensein, ward.hauenstein [-at-] gmail.com, 1-970-925-9159, United States
News From The Ladies With The Magic Hands - Los Manos Magicos Cooperative of Women in Todos Santos need your donations of fabrics, notions and any sewing equipment. We wish to thank Pamela Van Drees for her generous gift of sewing machine. Sewing Classes in Spanish or being offered on Tuesdays at 12 Noon at DIF. Los Manos Magicos have started a Quilt making session using different hands and talents for sewing, embroidering and painting. Come join us and you will be given some fabric to make your own design at home and return when you finish. DIF Tuesdays, 10:30 AM - Scotty Mclemore, scottybcs [-at-] hotmail.com, 612-10-05872
Dead Pelicans Update - This situation has escalated to such an extent, that Artosan has hired a crew to pick up and bury all the dead pelicans (over 100) in and around La Poza Lagoon. Elena Moreno is also providing a canoe to make it possible to remove them from the lagoon. Elena said this is the 3rd year this has occurred, but that this year seems particularly worse than ever before. Apparently, sardines, the pelican's food, have changed their migration patterns and the pelicans are starving to death, especially the younger ones.
At Tuesday's Eco Cafe, we collected part of the funds to pay for the crew, estimated to take 4 afternoons of work, which will cost 1,000 pesos. They will begin next week. We are collecting funds now to help pay for the entire effort at La Poza, but if you are aware of other beaches, such as Las Tunas, or anywhere else where there may be an abundance of dead pelicans lying around, we need to remove them from those areas as well. This affects all of us! The most important thing is to avoid any contamination or disease that would occur as a result of this very sad situation. Please bring your donation in an envelope with your name on it, to Dario at Amerimex Realty - Wendy Rains, wendyrains [-at-] earthlink.net, 612 145 0150, Todos Santos

Semarnat Approval - We were recently asked about building on a beach front lot in Pescadero that had been purchased by an American from Washington state. He was not aware that it is necessary to have Semarnat approval before one can apply for a building permit. Sometimes a developer who has numerous ocean front lots for sale will have applied for the Semarnat approval when the property was subdivided but this is not necessarily true. Therefore, it is important for the prospective buyer to ask if the approval has been granted and what other things (soil test, topo, survey) will be necessary before a building permit can be applied for. The approval process can take 6 or more months and cost $15,000 or more U.S. - Sylvia St.clair, Arq., sasinbaja [-at-] yahoo.com, www.bajaarchitect.com, 612-145-0563, Todos Santos
Driving Down From U.S. - Good advice, thanks much for sharing your experience. When I traveled to Baja with the Tortuga Verde (bus company) that is the route they chose. Friends from California also come that way. In my experience, the mainland/ferry route is more challenging.Take your time on those narrow winding mountain roads down the peninsula y todo esta bien :) Dusty Marie -
Re: Driving Baja - I have driven Baja many times also. Alone in my camper and with my girlfriend in the Subaru. I much prefer to cross at Tecate. Tijuana is huge and confusing. The signs are worthless and unless you know your way I almost guarantee you will get lost at least once. Tecate is small. I also cross early in the morning, 6am. You can get your tourist visa there and also pay for it there, thus eliminating the need to stand in line at a bank later. It is not far from there to Ensenada and it is not one of the expensive toll roads as is the road from TJ. I drive a big pickup and camper and do not drive fast. I make it to Catavina the first afternoon easily by 3 or 4. There is no gas at Catavina as someone has said. There hasnt been for 4 years or so. Gas up whenever you get the chance. From there it is an easy drive to San Ignacio by early afternoon. Next stop Constitution again by early afternoon. I stop there even though one could easily make it to TS before dark. It cannot be stressed enough, do not drive after dark!! Not because of banditos, but because of the road conditions and also because of the cattle that like to lay on the pavement at night for the warmth. Also, the buses and big trucks drive mostly at night and do not mind taking their half out of the middle. They don't seem to dim their lights for you either. I enjoy the beautiful drive and usually take 4 days to get to TS. Enjoy!! - Leo Deatherage, ldeatherage [-at-] hotmail, 612-161-2471, Todos Santos

Need Info On Medical Insurance & Doctors - I'm looking for info from anyone who has private international medical insurance, like Bupa - not traveler's insurance, but for folks who get most of their medical needs taken care of here and sometimes in the U.S. Bupa says that they pay medical bills directly, rather than reimbursing you. Does anyone out there have experience with how well this does or does not work? Also, I'm looking for recommendations for family doctors and for dentists(preferably in La Paz). - Marcee Yager, marceey [-at-] v-LLC.com, Todos Santos

Che Part 1 Next Tuesday And Che Part 2 Next Weds. At Buena Vida - Che Part 1 will be showing Tuesday and Part 2 will be showing Wednesday at Buena Vida both at 7:00pm. Che Part 1 also known as The Argentine (126 min), begins as Che and a band of Cuban exiles (led by Fidel Castro) reach the Cuban shore from Mexico in 1956. Within two years, they mobilized popular support and an army and toppled the U.S.-friendly regime of dictator Fulgencio Batista. Che Part 2(131min) also known as Guerilla starts when after the Cuban Revolution, Che is at the height of his fame and power. Then, he disappears, re-emerging incognito in Bolivia, where he organizes a small group of Cuban comrades and Bolivian recruits to start the great Latin American Revolution. - Jessie Rutowski, jessierutowski [-at-] hotmail.com, 6121450215
