Chiles en Nogada are, without a question, one of the most representative dishes of the Mexican Cuisine; popular tradition links them to an important event of Mexican history and they are also a delicious reminder of the colors of the Mexican flag.
Popular tradition says that in August 1821, when Emperor Agustin de Iturbide signed the Cordoba Treaty (the document in which the Spanish Crown agreed to the Independence of Mexico), on his way back to the capital, he stopped in Puebla to have a special celebration, where the Augustinian nuns prepared a very special dish for the happy occasion, Chiles en Nogada. The name means "Chile Topped With Pecan Sauce (Nogada).
The dish is a class of stuffed chile, made of green poblano chili stuffed with cooked ground meat, seeds and dried fruit. It is served cold and topped with a slightly sweet pecan sauce, the decoration is made of pomegranate. It has a sweet and sour taste and it is not hot at all. - Brenda Casillas, brendacasillas [ at ] hotmail.com, 6121416297

2009 Daylight Saving Time In The US and Mexico - As many of you may know, US Daylight Saving Time will begins this weekend. This Sunday, March 8 at 2 AM, most US clocks will be set forward 1 hour. Mexico's Daylight Saving Time does not start for another month. Mexico starts Daylight Saving Time in the first week of April. This year, Mexico's Daylight Saving Time will begin on Sunday, April 5. Until then, the time in the US Pacific Time zone and the time in Baja California Sur will be the same.
The Mexican state of Sonora and the US State of Arizona (except for the Navajo Nation community) do not observe Daylight Saving Time. Both States observe Mountain Standard Time throughout the year. - The Baja Western Onion, www.timeanddate.com/news/time/mexico-dst-april-5-2009.html
Attention Las Tunas Home Owners And Land Owners - We would like to compile a list of home owners and land owners in the Las Tunas area so that we can address issues such as proposed development projects, water, electricity, SEMARNAP, PROFEPA, road grading, crime, etc as a group and not have to face these issues alone. There is a lot of information to be shared that is not always readily available when you buy a house or land here. We feel that as a group, we can be a stronger entity and accomplish more for the good of the community than we can as individuals. If you would like to be on our mailing list, please email us at LasTunasInfo [ at ] aol.com

Pelicans - I was wondering why there were so many dead pelicans in and around the lagoon near Posada de Poza. Is something leaking in there that is doing harm? I counted 49 whole bodies there was also many half decomposed. We love Todos Santos and we have to return home, could someone send this note to someone who can check into this to see if there is a problem? Thank you - Joanne Miller, dougmiller96 [ at ] hotmail.com, Todos Santos
Pelican Deaths Throughout Baja and California - After receiving several reports of Pelican Deaths in our area, we did some investigation. Turns out that there have been reports of pelicans, specifically the California Brown Pelican, dying in record numbers up and down the coasts of California, Mexico and Baja. Hundreds of dead and dying pelicans have been reported in Southern California, with many appearing confused and disoriented. There have been reports of them flying into cars and boats, and landing in the middle of the freeways. Reports of dying pelicans have ranged southward to San Felipe, the Sea of Cortez and Guadalajara Mexico.
Researchers at first thought the problem might be due to poisoning from a toxic algae bloom but this has been discounted in the majority of cases. Also, West Nile Virus has been ruled out. Beginning in January, there were several news reports filed on the web. One of them is here on National Public Radio:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=99421698Although the cause(s) has not yet been totally confirmed, many researchers think that the record die offs are due to freak cold weather in Oregon and Washington that caught many pelicans before they could make their migration South in the fall last year. Many pelicans were found to be malnourished, with signs of frost bite on their feet and bills. I could not find out if our BCS Pelicans migrate all the way up to Oregon but I did find some information on this site about their range:
http://bss.sfsu.edu/holzman/courses/fall01%20projects/bpelican1.htm- Alan Thompson, alan [ at ] BajaWesternOnion.com, bss.sfsu.edu/holzman/courses/fall01%20projects/bpelican1.htm, Todos Santos
After nesting season is over, the California brown pelican will usually follow the food supply north up the coast to Canada and British Colombia, its historical dispersal range. This dispersal is responsible for the influx of the Mexican breeding population to the California coast in the months of May through October.
