Possible Gringo Speed Trap - While on the way to La Paz at 10 AM Saturday morning, we were stopped at the outskirts South of the city limits by the Policia for "speeding." I saw the cop with someone else pulled over on the other side of the highway and I didn't think anything of it, and we even made eye contact as we drove by. As I wasn't going fast, I didn't think to check my speedometer. Many cars had passed us and continued to do so. Two miles down the road, he caught up and pulled us over and accused us of speeding. He informed us that, although the Federal Highway speed is 80 km, it drops to 60 km at the city limits and said we were going faster than that. This was out on the four lane where the new section meets the old. When he said he was going to write us a ticket for $807 pesos, we swallowed our anger, paid a mordita and went on our way.
Could have just been bad luck but it's possible they're targeting cars there now because the road is better coming into town and people enter the city limits with greater speed. BTW, parts of the same section of older four lane are posted with various and conflicting speed limit signs reading 40 km and even 30 km (for our metrically challenged readers, that's only 18 mph on a four lane highway!). So, may be nothing but be cautious. - Alan and Debra
We just made the drive from Tijuana to Los Barriles in our motor home and the roads are in excellent condition though there are some vados needing repair from San Ignacio south but they are well marked with the orange and black striped signs. The vegetation is very green and lots of wildflowers. There is about a 15% overcharge per gallon at Guerro Negro, Loreto and the middle station in Ciudad Constitution, there are probably more but those are the ones I checked. The station at Vizcaino was right on and there is wifi at the hotel and restaurant at the Y. Have a great trip, B and K, Los Barriles (Courtesy, Baja Pony Express)
"What's In YOUR Tinaco...?"
On our last trip to the States, we did some research on the best way to keep water storage tinacos and cisterns disinfected. Although we installed an RO/UV filter system below our kitchen sink to purify cold water there just for drinking and cooking use, we were concerned about bacteria and algae in our entire water system (we don't brush our teeth in the kitchen!).
We talked to some manufacturers up North and brought back a supply of Ozone purifiers that are highly effective in destroying harmful microorganisms and chemicals, including E. coli, Salmonella, Guardia, Cryptosporidium, parasites, bacteria, viruses, molds, pesticides, man-made chemicals and more. Unlike UV, ozone has a residual sanitizing effect. Once the ozone is injected into the tinaco or cistern, it continues to work throughout the entire piping system to keep everything clean. And, unlike Chlorine, ozone produces no tri-halomethanes or other harmful by products. A simple carbon block filter then removes any residual ozone "taste" for drinking and cooking.
If you're interested in how we can help you purify your home water system with ozone, please let us know. - Alan, Todos Santos Technologies, mailto:alan (-at-) todossantostechnologies.com

Question To The Baja Western Onion: "Hola, just curious....is 'coconut' a code word, or are people really looking for coconuts?"
Answer: Because of possible issues with Mexican Tax Laws, we would prefer that people use the word "trade" instead of "for sale" when posting items they want to get rid of. The word "Coconuts" is strictly optional :)
