Proposed Coastline Development Plan - Todos Santos, Pescadero, Las Playitas, Baja California Sur, Mexico - by , Publisher, Baja Western Onion

There was a meeting this last Thursday, July 26, at the Cultural Center in Todos Santos to solicit comments from the public regarding the proposed Master Plan for Development of the entire coastline spanning from Los Cerritos to La Pastora, and encompassing Todos Santos and Pescadero at the center. Present at the meeting were the mayor of Todos Santos, the current and former Presidents of the local Ejido, representatives of the Mexican government, and a standing-room only crowd of about 80 local residents.

The proposed Master Plan is reportedly being developed by some of the same architects and engineers who designed the Master Plan for the development of Cancun. The Plan is being initiated by the Mexican government, and not local officials or city planners. However, local input from residents is being solicited before this Plan is finalized. The Plan has radical implications for the future development of our local area that will affect all residents and property owners. New paved roads up and down the coastline, a Malecon from Todos Santos to La Pastora, and opening up many recreational and undeveloped areas to commercial development and tourism interests are being proposed.

Many residents at the meeting voiced concerns about the current infrastructure being able to support such development, as well as the ecological impact on our local communities and the possibility of losing the rural, small-town character of our area forever. Lack of water and sewage treatment were mentioned frequently as an immediate and serious concern.

Regardless of your views pro or con about development in our area, all residents are urged to become aware of the proposed, sweeping changes all along our coastline that will result from this Plan. Full-sized copies of the proposed development maps are on display at the Cultural Center. You can also download one of the maps as a large JPEG image or original PDF file by clicking the links below. (Thanks to Steve Monaco for sending the original file)

There will be another town hall meeting to solicit comments about the Plan this next Thursday, August 2nd at 5 PM at the Cultural Center in Todos Santos, and all area residents and interested parties are invited to attend. - Alan Thompson - Publisher, The Baja Western Onion.
